Children's Physiotherapy

What is this service?

The Children's Physiotherapy Department provides a range of evidence based physiotherapy interventions for all children in Stockport aged from 0 to 16 who have a physical impairment or disability or are in need of rehabilitation following an acute period of illness or orthopaedic surrgery for neurological conditions.

We work in partnership with other professionals and agencies to ensure a fully co-ordinated approach which aims to reduce the impact of physical difficulties on all aspects of growth, development and social interaction.

As well as providing physiotherapy treatment, we train those around the child/young person to carry out physiotherapy programmes and postural management throughout the day.

The service oversees the provision of specialist footwear, splints, postural and mobility equipment and supports families on provision of wheelchairs or specialist buggies.

The majority of our work is carried out in the community setting, either in children’s homes, nurseries or schools. We also visit leisure facilities, extended family, child minders and any other settings that would benefit the child. We have clinic rooms in Stepping Hill and Beckwith House, and provide hydrotherapy from a number of locations.

Who can make a referral?

Anyone who is in close contact with the child, who feels there may be a problem with their development or motor skills. This can be a GP, Health Visitor, Paediatrician, Teacher, etc. Parents can also contact us directly to discuss any concerns they may have, and we are able to accept referrals where appropriate in this manner.
